Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like typical physical horror, but within Together exists a deep examination about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot begins when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple face the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
