The Video Platform Grants Viewers Power to Decrease Artificial Intelligence-Made Videos in Personal Streams

TikTok is introducing a new feature that permits them to reduce the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their feeds. This initiative comes as the service announced that it now features over 1 bn AI-generated clips.

Trial and Implementation

This change is undergoing trials over the coming weeks before a full-scale release. This advancement aligns with a rise in AI content, driven by recent content generation software.

AI Proliferation Online

Recent reports that nearly 10% of the quickest rising channels on another major platform primarily display AI-generated videos. A significant portion of this content is classified as low-quality AI content, a label for inferior, factory-style content that is frequently illogical or surreal.

Our research shows that many people like content made with AI tools, including computer-generated images to educational videos, and we want to give people the option to adjust the amount of that, according to their own choices,” commented a company executive.

AI on the Platform

TikTok announced that there are presently 1.3 billion videos on its service tagged as made with AI. In total, more than 100 m pieces of content are submitted to the service every day, making AI content a minor percentage of its total content library.

Customizing Your Feed

Members will be able to limit or boost the volume of AI content they see by using the topic control feature in the app and choosing “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that can already be adjusted under the filter include news, style, aesthetics, and choreography.

AI Disclosure Rules

TikTok’s rules require content makers to tag “realistic” artificially created content, and it prohibits harmful AI impersonations of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any realistic AI video that is without a tag can be taken down under its user guidelines.

In addition, the platform will from now on add an “AI-made” watermark to content created with its own AI tools, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for identifying AI-generated material. This measure is intended to stop users from seeking to evade the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

The platform is also introducing a two million dollar awareness program for professionals and groups to create educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will support non-profit groups focused on educating programming and robotics.

Platform Protection

The video-sharing app has justified its safety measures, following discussion over proposals to cut jobs for a large number of content moderators in Britain. It is planning to cut a significant number of roles in its content moderation department in its British office, with labor groups and digital protection specialists raising concerns that humans are being replaced by machine-led review.

A company official stated that people-led review would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by filtering out the most distressing content ahead of it gets reviewed by staff. The company reported a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content handled by safety staff over the last 12 months due to reliance on its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to balance humans and technology to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s very important to limit contact with unsafe media as quickly as possible, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is making a difference operate efficiently.”
