A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Return to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials confirmed on Friday that the forty-five-year-old icon will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had earlier stated in November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a special entry, a fortnight before the Australian Open. The Australian Open noted that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing during the summer season," Venus said. "I’ve had so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to go back to a venue that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Statistical Highlights

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. This year will represent the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Setting a New Record

The tournament pointed out that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Open's singles competition, surpassing the record formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.

Latest Personal Milestone

In the final days of December, Williams wed Danish-born actor and model Andrea Preti in Palm Beach, Florida.
