The Details Known Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
At least 16 individuals perished and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to the hospital.
Those who died have not yet been publicly named, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the victims who are known so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She recounted the events before the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
