Significant Upheaval Projected: Britain's Most Severe Global Warming Outcomes Laid Bare by Researchers

The most severe potential impacts of the global heating for the UK have been mapped by scientists, including a searing 4C jump in mean temperatures to a 6.5-foot rise in sea level. Another scenario envisions a plunge of 6C in temperature following the failure of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact farming and energy needs.

Plausible Events, Not Guarantees

These effects, some of which are connected to irreversible climate shifts, are considered as improbable but plausible. The researchers said that these scenarios addressed a shortfall in planning that had left the UK not ready for catastrophic possibilities.

"The climate extremes we have mapped should not be seen as certainties, but they are possible," said Nigel Arnell who directed the analysis. "The UK has been planning without the methods to plan for worst-case scenarios. We've now supplied planners what they need to plan for environmental results they wish to avoid, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Range of Severe Conditions Scenarios

A further series of worst-case scenarios maps the potential extent of severe conditions between now and the close of the 2100s. These suggest that thermometer readings could skyrocket in certain periods by up to 6C higher than the norm, while precipitation could be three times standard measurements.

The likelihood of the catastrophic events occurring remains uncertain due to a lack of certainty about what steps will be implemented to combat global warming and how the Earth's systems will respond. This approach was compared to defence planning or resilience checks for economic stability.

Key Possibility Highlights

  • 4C Temperature Rise: Planetary heating soaring past 4C by 2100 could transpire if emissions cuts collapses or if powerful amplifying effects like the Amazon rainforest perishing unleash its enormous store of carbon. This would cause severe and lengthy heatwaves and dry spells affecting the UK in summer.
  • Atlantic Current Collapse: A key circulation system, the North Atlantic current, is losing strength and showing signs of collapse due to ocean warming. A collapse beginning in 2030 would lead to a drastic cooling in the UK. "Farming would be severely challenged and water resources would be drastically changed," explained the lead researcher.
  • Sudden Ocean Inundation: A rise of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could take place if polar ice in the Arctic and Antarctic disintegrate quickly, submerging low-lying areas. Unlike the other scenarios, this threat is already understood by infrastructure experts.
  • Clean Air Warming: Global averages could also be driven up by about 0.75C if industrial aerosols is sharply cut. This paradoxical outcome occurs because pollution particles from burning coal reflect solar radiation from warming the ground.

Building Resilience Against the Worst

The worst-case scenarios could be used to inform the development of major projects, such as expanded cities, power generation facilities and flood defences. Awareness of these environmental threats could also accelerate the transition to reduce carbon pollution.

The study created the severe projections using a mix of observed and historical experience, computer simulations and established principles. The possibilities exclude broader worldwide issues including the agricultural collapse and resource wars.

This work was requested as part of a government’s risk assessment framework. Independent analyses have stated that not enough attention was being allocated to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.

The government's climate advisors has recommended that the UK must "prepare for two degrees of warming" and examine the dangers for four degrees. Previous adaptation plans have been criticised as being "insufficient" by some observers.

A national response commented: "Global warming is at the core of the country's focus, both building resilience and transitioning to a clean energy superpower. It is crucial that the UK is prepared for the impacts."
