In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
