Maddie McCann Siblings Detail Alleged Stalker's Behavior as Deeply Upsetting and Unsettling
Maddie McCann's twin siblings, Sean and Amelie, have testified in court that their interactions with an accused stalker were deeply upsetting and creepy. They explained feeling anxious and scared by a woman who insisted she was their long-lost sister.
Relentless Contact Described as Scary
Appearing via video link, Amelie described how the defendant, Julia Wandelt, reached out to her repeatedly through social media and written correspondence. She said the relentlessness was quite scary since it's impossible to predict what she’ll do next.
Communications from the defendant were read in court, in which she described memories of living in the McCann household that she said were recovered under hypnosis. She told the court, It's very disturbing that she’s coming up with these supposed memories, despite the fact she’s not Maddie.
Fabricated Images Heightened Unease
The court learned that Wandelt had created pictures of Amelie and herself as young girls, which the state alleged were made with AI tools. A number of these images were transmitted through online channels, while others were produced physically and enclosed in a letter to Amelie.
Amelie said, I didn’t like it, it made me feel very uncomfortable. She had clearly altered the images to make me look more like her, which was quite distressing. I knew I didn't resemble that, I knew it had been manipulated.
Psychological Impact on the Family
Amelie also discussed the impact of the supposed harassment on her parent, their mother, who testified about being approached at her residence by Wandelt and her co-defendant, Karen Spragg.
In my opinion my mother found it the most difficult. She was targeted by the defendant to a greater extent than the rest of us and I believe it definitely had a negative effect on her and her mental health, Amelie testified. It's distressing when a person is pleading with you to accept their claims and playing with your emotions, to the point you are doubting your own judgment.
Sibling's Testimony on Anxiety and Online Attention
In a witness statement read to the trial, her brother said that for him, he had not been severely affected by the defendant's alleged stalking. But he had been upset that she was drawing social media scrutiny, with people saying hurtful and unjust things about his parents.
If Wandelt was not suffering from a psychological condition and was fully aware she is not Madeleine, yet makes these claims, that would be very distressing for me, he testified. I do not believe she is my sister. The reality that Julia is engaging in this behavior has resulted in a significant amount of anxiety and I find it deeply troubling.
Wandelt and her co-defendant have pleaded not guilty to harassing the McCann household. The trial continue.
